I have a confession to make. I have an obsession with lighting—candles, fairy lights, Christmas lights, chandeliers, lamps, lanterns. Lighting has the power to change an environment, set a mood and lift spirits. To personalize my home, I found a large lantern with plain glass panels and replaced them with drawings from four of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies: Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. These are Japanese animation films that I grew up watching and loving as a kid.
Each panel shows characters and backgrounds from each film. I had originally considered coloring the panels, but realized that I loved how the black and cream paper looked against the wood of the lantern and left it as is. (I created a separate, colored Studio Ghibli themed lantern to enjoy too, check it out here.) This lantern is a great conversation piece and has a lot of detail on each panel, and friends always tell me they see something new every time they see it!
