To me, food represents memories, experiences, culture and family. I started a personal food blog, WAI SIK, to record and share recipes from my life, and needed a logo and website to go with it. WAI SIK 為食 in Cantonese Chinese is a slang term that in essence, means that all that you do, is "for food"—what one would call a foodie in English (or even gluttonous), perhaps. Ever since I was a kid, I've always been called WAI SIK by my family. I wanted the blog to not only be an homage to my cultural background and family, but also a platform to represent food and recipes from my perspective as an Asian American.
The logo design is comprised of the handwritten and vectorized Chinese words for WAI SIK, a calligraphic brush stroke in the shape of a bowl, as well as a red stamp saying "For Food", inspired by the Chinese red signature stamps or seals of approval used on art and documents. |
Website Design
For the website, I produce all the content including graphics, photographs and recipes. I mixed the use of both simple serif and sans serif fonts to keep the look and feel of the blog modern. I specifically chose a family style meal photo for the header image because those were the kinds of meals I grew up eating, and are standard practices in many Asian homes.
The website is relatively simple and heavily image driven. With the purpose of the food blog being a place for recipes, I was intentional in designing the home page to include a clean, easy to navigate user experience with a number of appetizing food-based imagery that would engage viewers to other content pages on the website. |
WAI SIK Videos
In addition to writing recipes and photographing food, I also on occasion make recipe videos for a more hands on, easy to follow experience for my readers. I also made several "Try This!" videos to post on my WAI SIK social media, to showcase various restaurants that I or my family highly recommend. Even though it takes some time to make the videos and I don't get to do it as often as I'd like, the process in creating these videos were always so much fun, especially whenever we got a chance to talk to the chefs!
