In 2018 and 2019, I lead the Berkeley Heights YMCA's Lunar New Year Festival Planning Committee in partnership with the Berkeley Heights Diversity Council. In addition to the event organizing, I designed the marketing materials, video promotions as well as day of signage.
Flyer and Poster Design
For the event's design, I drew inspiration from traditional Asian and Chinese art elements, my personal cultural knowledge of the Lunar New Year Celebrations and research into the celebrations of other Lunar New Year traditions. While the colors and stylistic design of the icons were created in accordance to Y branding guidelines, the icon art elements provided a fresh, modern feel to the event. The colors of red and yellow are popular colors to be seen during Chinese celebrations, while red, yellow and blue are also part of the Korean Lunar New Year, or Seollal. (Red and yellow is also used in Thailand's Lunar New Year, or Songkran).
Website and Video
The Lunar New Year Festival website was set up with matching artwork, as well as information about the event, schedule of activities, performances, community partners and more. For the first Lunar New Year event in 2018, I created a video promoting our food vendor for the event, a local Thai restaurant, Proud Thai Cookery. The video garnered a substantial amount of positive attention on local Facebook community groups and not only drew more participation in the event, but also drew additional business for the restaurant.
After the 2018 Lunar New Year event, I created a recap video to share, which was also used for the marketing of 2019's festival. |
As a food lover, filming a feature video and interviewing the chefs of Proud Thai Cookery was almost a dream come true. Not only did I get to personally learn how to make some of my favorite Thai dishes (I make a darn good Drunken Noodle now thanks to Chef Dana), but I was able to learn more about Thai culture. I felt lucky to be able to share it with the community.
Press and Photos from the Event
"Lunar New Year was an incredible experience. Between the excellent performances, the many exhibits and activities for kids, and the huge turnout from residents as well as from neighboring towns, I could not have been more proud to be part of the Berkeley Heights Diversity Council. This was Berkeley Heights at its best - a warm, welcoming community that celebrates its strengths. I look forward to taking part in future Lunar New Year events in our town for many years to come!"

“It was nice to see the local community come together and have the opportunity to learn more about the culture and to celebrate an important event in their calendar. I personally learned a number of things I was unaware of. This was a great event that fits so well with the Y. It underpinned the latest commercial on TV that demonstrates the Y as a catalyst for inclusion for all with a wonderful environment. “
