When I was approached with the special opportunity to design an indoor playroom for children at Kuki's Playshop, it was almost like a dream come true. Kuki's Playshop was a play space that emphasized the importance in play and imagination. I had few restrictions and was given free creative reign in the design of the room. What I respected and appreciated about Kuki's Playshop was that the team emphasized the importance of incorporating books and toys into the wall art to help improve children's motor skills and facilitate learning. It was a fun challenge that I welcomed, and I based my design on the toys and materials available at the Playshop.
Kuki's Playshop had a couple main characters that were utilized in their lesson plans, storytelling and puppet theaters, specifically a gingerbread baby named Kuki and his Granny. The room design incorporated Granny's house as the puppet theater and reading nook, while the rest of the room included a town square on one wall, and a road that lead to a castle overlooking a lake. This was a very fulfilling project because children not only played in this lovingly designed space, but also improved social skills, motor skills, used their imaginations, learned values of kindness and caring and much more.
