As New Jersey's first Diversity, Inclusion, and Global Innovation Network YMCA, the Summit Area YMCA (SAY) wanted to make some interior sign updates to visually demonstrate their commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all. As a female and a minority growing up in the United States, I was honored and excited to have the opportunity to design welcoming facility signage and be part of a project that would make others feel safe and included. I love environmental design because it has the potential to make an immediate, visual impact on a person.
For this project, I designed a desk wrap around sign that said "Welcome" in over 20 different languages. This wrap around desk sign was aimed at making an immediate, lasting impression on all those who entered through the main entrance of the Summit YMCA.
The posters are posted in the lobby areas of the branch so that members, community members, staff and volunteers can feel accepted as they are. As the SAY is a nonprofit organization, there wasn't a big budget for signage, so I worked with a local print vendor to secure durable, yet cost effective materials for the desk wrap signs and posters. |
