The Berkeley Heights YMCA, a branch of the Summit Area YMCA (SAY), had a newly built location in the Berkeley Heights community and they wanted to display a special donor wall to thank and commemorate significant donors and community partners who helped fund the amazing 40,000 square foot project. When tasked with designing this significant part of the facility, I was beyond excited. The new facility was beautiful and modern, and the donor wall would have to match that.
When we sat down to discuss the vision for the Berkeley Heights YMCA donor wall, the Summit Area YMCA's President & CEO said that he wanted to WOW everyone who stepped into the building. Their Capital Campaign was investing over $14 million dollars back into the community—the donor wall had to blow people away, while still staying within a slim nonprofit budget. Oy vey! It would be challenging to be sure, but I was excited to make an impact.
Located directly across from the lobby's Welcome Desk and steps from the main entrance, I developed a unique, sculptural installation consisting of 60 panels of polished acrylic hung at varying heights on the wall. Names of donors are digitally printed into the surface of each color panel, with tiered levels of donors represented in 5 panel sizes and alternating brand colors of the Y.

The glossy donor panels change with the light shining from the building's beautiful skylight above. During the day the panels catch the sunlight from the skylight and from the surrounding light of the building's interior. The installation's vertical design symbolizes the growth and potential to be discovered within the new facility, while the polished acrylic complements the sleek, modern structural design and beauty of the surrounding architecture.
To the side of the installation, I created a small, clear acrylic plaque thanking donors for their gift to the Berkeley Heights YMCA, as well as the SAY's intent on how to drive impact in the community. The plaque's placement and design aimed to create an art installation experience with the donor wall's sculptural installation, elevating the overall design, feel and presence of the lobby area.
