For my beloved Grandmother's 90th birthday, I drew a 4.7' x 2' long scroll of nine cranes gathered by a stream and surrounded by cherry blossoms. In Chinese culture and mythology, cranes are symbolic of longevity and immortality, and that immortals are often depicted as riding on cranes. Cherry blossoms are a symbol of beauty and power. In terms of composition, I wanted it to look like a gathering of cranes (like a gathering of a family), within an elegant scene celebrating the majesty of the cranes and their great wings, and symbolic of our family gathering to celebrate our family matriarch's birthday. She now has it proudly framed as a statement piece in her living room (an upgrade from my childhood drawings stuck to the refrigerator, haha!)
This piece is dear to me because I made it specifically for my grandmother and it connected me with my roots. I love all things mythology, and the trifecta of linking significant Chinese symbols to my passion for art and to my love for my Grandmother, resulted in a piece that produces all kinds of warm and fuzzy feelings in my heart.
